Turkey's First Indigenous Electric Car Factory Inaugurated, Aiming for 100,000 Capacity

 

On October 29, in the Gemlik district of Bursa, Turkey, the inauguration of the country's first indigenous electric car factory took place, marked by the roll-off of the first car from the assembly line. The momentous event was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, signifying the government's support for the initiative.

The factory, established as a greenfield investment with an initial capacity of 100,000 vehicles, represents a significant milestone for Turkey's automotive industry. However, company executive Karakaş clarified that reaching the full capacity would not happen immediately. Initially, they plan to produce around 20,000 vehicles in the upcoming year.

Looking beyond the domestic market, the company has already started studying potential export destinations, with a focus on European countries. Although details remain undisclosed, they have set a target timeline of 15 to 18 months to commence exports.

Excitement for the locally produced vehicle, branded as Togg, extends beyond government support, with business associations expressing keen interest. Some associations have announced plans to place large orders, with pre-orders for the C-SUV model set to begin in February.

In a bid to provide comprehensive customer service, Togg aims to offer car services directly through seven regions and approximately 20 locations. Additionally, mobile service vehicles will be deployed to cater to customers' needs.

The introduction of Togg vehicles to the local market is eagerly anticipated for March next year. Pricing details are set to be unveiled in February, and while online sales will be available, Togg plans to open 19 "experience centers" to give potential buyers a firsthand look at their offerings.

Moreover, the project is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, particularly in Bursa. İbrahim Burkay, president of the Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlights that Togg's production will contribute to an estimated $40 billion in export revenues. Furthermore, approximately 30 companies in a local organized industry zone will be involved in manufacturing components for Togg vehicles.

In an additional development, President Erdoğan announced an agreement with a prominent global company to establish a lithium-ion battery factory adjacent to the Togg facility. This strategic move aims to secure a local supply of batteries, a crucial component for electric vehicles.

Overall, Turkey's foray into indigenous electric car production is set to create ripples in the automotive industry, bolstering the country's position as a key player in the green mobility revolution.
